Artful Rebel Artwork - Design Primer

THE REBELWERK’S PUBLIC ART THEME & DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES

The fundamental underlying RebelWerks’ public artwork theme (i.e.broad idea or message we would like to convey by our network of artists’ pubic artwork ) revolves around this:

“Kindness, compassion, and generosity are powerful acts that can change lives, communities, and the world in positive and deeply meaningful ways. By deciding, today , to take action, whether those actions be small or large, to tap into your own brand of kindness, compassion, and generosity to touch the lives of others you will be helping to  create a more inclusive, engaged, and vibrant community for all!”

To support this theme, our Public Artworks and Programs will:

1) Be informed and influenced in collaboration with the community:

  • Its members, its civic organizations, and its institutions
  • Reflecting an understanding, sensitivity, and appreciation for  the unique history, culture, beliefs, challenges/needs, hopes, and aspirations of the community  and audiences our artwork and programs’ are meant to speak to.

2) Be visually and conceptually created to impact audiences by,

  • ·Striving to be the best visual storytellers we can be; A picture should be worth a thousand words! Whether the composition is simple or complex, it should grab the hearts and minds of  audiences in positive and inspiring ways.
  •  Producing  artwork compositions that avoid eliciting feelings of fear, guilt, and/or frustration as a way to motivate or inspire audiences. Instead, RebelWerk’s Artful Rebels use powerful and unique imagery as their primary means of inspiring audiences to use kindness, compassion, and generosity in new and/or incremental ways to  further improve the level of inclusiveness, engagement, and vibrancy of their community.
  • ·Striving to appeal to audiences through aesthetically pleasing, intellectually honest works of art that can quickly capture an audience’s attention and engage them in ways that evoke a positive and shared visceral reaction; a reaction that leads audiences toward taking tangible steps forward in terms of using the power of kindness, compassion, and generosity to help improve the lives of others and make their community a better place to live for all.

3) Be Inspiring by,

  • ·Avoiding the need for extensive explanations on how participants and audiences should be feeling or why they should be feeling so moved; we let the artwork talk for itself.
  • Encouraging both  individual and the collective community acts of humanity (i.e., a distinct change in audience/community member behaviors following their interaction/exposure to our Artful Rebels’ artwork or programs; changes that are reflected in the level and quality of  personal/collective acts of kindness, compassion, generosity they subsequently exhibit towards others; especially towards those who are being under-served, are facing unique  life challenges, or are being socially excluded within the community due to factors beyond their immediate or long-term control.

4) Be contextually created/exhibited in order to engage and affect community audiences by,

  •  Creating, installing, and exhibiting the artwork in ways that take the environment into full  consideration while ensuring the artwork and program content can quickly capture and retain the attention, interest, and engagement of its intended audience.
  • Ensuring the artwork is publicly accessible to all!
